The Story Behind Altered: Awakening

Every story starts with a question. For me, it was this: What happens if you wake up one day and find out that everything you thought you knew about yourself and your life was a lie? That question became the spark that lit this entire book. The idea didn’t come all at once—it revealed itself slowly, in pieces, until I realized I was writing a story about identity, truth, and the ties that hold us together even when everything else feels like it is falling apart. I’ve always loved superhero movies and the idea of becoming something special, of discovering a hidden power that changes everything. I’ve also been drawn to stories about unlikely groups who come together in times of need and realize they’re capable of so much more than they ever imagined. From those inspirations, this story began to take shape—a tale of twins, friendship and an extraordinary journey. At its core, it’s about connection—between family, between friends, and between the different versions of ourselves we grow into.

Developing the characters was both the greatest challenge and the most rewarding part of the process. Samantha and Stone, the twins at the heart of the story, came alive in my imagination long before I had a plot. Sammy’s voice arrived first—curious, emotional, and brave—and once I could hear her, I knew the story would center on her search for truth and strength in the face of conflict. Stone followed soon after, protective, loyal and sometimes overbearing but carrying secrets that tested their bond. I also wanted to weave in a love story—one that shows how finding first love can be sweet and powerful, even in the midst of chaos. As Ashley, Tyler, Jason and even Delilah entered the story, it grew into something bigger than I expected: a journey of friendship, courage, and hope for a happy future. Watching these characters discover their power and their friendships with each other reminded me why I write—to create worlds where ordinary people become extraordinary.
